In motion
As the viewer moves, the vertical lines slide across the face and the gaze subtly changes. The portrait never settles into one expression, reinforcing the uncertainty already introduced by the title.

About This Artwork
Why…? is a layered portrait of Amanda Seyfried built around the ambiguity of her gaze. The title turns a familiar face into an unanswered question: curiosity, doubt, challenge or vulnerability can emerge depending on how the expression is read. Painted across separate plexiglass layers in 2021, the vertical marks shift across Amanda Seyfried’s face as the viewer moves. The portrait changes physically while its meaning remains deliberately unresolved.
